War is father of all,
  king of all.
Some it makes gods,
  some it makes men,
some it makes slaves,
  some free.
These are the words of Heraclitus, who lived around 500 BC and also believed in constant change, and in the necessity of opposites. It's not clear if he believed in historical cycles, and he was probably a pessimist, or at least had a small opinion of people in general. But maybe he was just trying to challenge them. He certainly believed in the purpose of war, as the quote above shows, and if we interpret modern events optimistically then we can foresee the cycle driving us forward towards a better future.
