What's in a name? I am going to start using the more conventional "Generation X" appellation to denote what was originally termed the "13th Generation" by the authors of the turnings theory. They've stopped using the "13er" name, anyway, and I noticed the site isn't getting many hits from people searching for "Generation X."
I have also decided to use the name "Homeland Generation" for the next Artists, who are most likely being born now. This name was given on the Fourth Turning discussion forum, I'm not sure by whom, but it's fitting.
I will update the background info and commentaries according to this convention over the next few days.

Kids using drugs more. According to an article from AP (no longer available on-line), kids are using some drugs at a growing rate - those legally prescribed under professional supervision. So, they may be cleaning up in some ways, but are being polluted in others. The recreational drugs Boomers used to expand their minds and break free from conformity are being replaced by therapeutic drugs used to control the mind and promote conformity.

Turning again? Josh from Calaveras, California, writes:
From the main page of your site:
We'll post links we find to those commentaries and news reports which indicate that we may, in fact, have turned again.
This isn't fair. You ought to be posting articles that support the third turning side of the debate, too.
I think stories supporting the Third Turning side are much more common; for example, most of the "9/11" retrospectives said something to the effect of "well, we really haven't changed after all, have we..." Stories which show America forming the Fourth Turning mindset are the rarer finds which deserve notice.

Rates of drug use are down. A visitor from Georgia commented in the guestbook about an article in the Sacramento Bee on high school recreational drug use, debating the interpretation that rates are down. The title of the article and some of the verbiage suggest that the party days of Ridgemont High rage on, but the stats given support the position that kids are cleaning up - among 7th graders, alcohol use went from 35% to 30%, tobacco use from 7% to 4% and marijuana use from 9% to 7%.

Welcome. This weblog will now serve as the forum for announcements about the Generation Watch web site. I think this will prove superior to including such proclamations among the news links. I will also sometimes post responses to questions or concerns which visitors may present in the guestbook or via e-mail.
