Morals gap. Recently televised indecent exposure has inspired a public outcry, mostly lamenting the sad state of the culture. Not as common, but just as convinced, is the opinion that the furor is an overreaction - society, after all, needs someone to push the boundaries of the acceptable. Do these two reactions reflect a red zone-blue zone gap, or perhaps a Boomer-Xer one?
Actually, the divide is best understood as between parents of young children and adults without children. This factor predicts moral stance better than politics, religion, or age bracket. And this story illustrates that fact perfectly:
Pornographer to Sell Whitehouse Web Site The Whitehouse.com Web site, one of the best examples that the Internet isn't always what it seems, is getting out of the pornography business. Its owner says he's worried what his preschool-age son might think.
Whichever side of the gap you're on, you can be sure that the future favors those who wish to guard the sensitive minds of children. Expanding social boundaries was the mission of a bygone age, the whole purpose of the morals revolution which scrambled the culture of the last third of the twentieth century. After twenty years of prancing princes and misbehaving madonnas, it's time for something completely different.

Swan song of the sexpots. Today's hot young female stars - Christina Aguilera, Paris Hilton, Britney Spears - exhibit a trashy sexuality which emulates older role models such as Janet Jackson and Madonna. It would seem that the next generation is readily adopting the free and easy attitude about sex which is one of the legacies of the 1960's cultural revolution.
But there is another thing the three young ladies mentioned above have in common - all were born in 1980 or 1981, and belong to the last wave of Generation X. Anxious culture observers should look to the next wave of rising young stars - Amanda Bynes, Hillary Duff, Mandy Moore - to see the beginnings of a return to modesty. Given the massive repercussions from the recent bodice-ripping Super Bowl halftime show, it is easy to see that the days of the S&M music and dance spectacle are numbered.
